If you want to understand how the relationship of a LAN to LAN, it must be understood how data packets are transmitted over a local network. The analogy that can be used in this explanation is how we send a postcard to someone else and returned. This means that there are plenty of postcards wrapped in an envelope. The envelope then moves according to the sender and the recipient. So communication network also contains a message that is wrapped by the envelopes and then wrapped again with the envelopes.

The concept of a data packet that is in a lot of envelopes for transmission is the key to understanding the LAN and LAN to LAN communications. Application programs running on a computer network does not need to be designed specifically for network operations. They sent a request to the computer operating system Microsoft Windows systems in general. Regardless of whether the computer is fitted with a network or not. But on the computer network of a particular layer of the networking software called redirector intercept every request and move it to another group of small programs that are responsible for communication in the entire network. Due to the redirector , the sources are far away such as files , printers and communication devices can appear on the user computer and the software as if they were connected directly to the computer .

Network communication program contained in each network node covers a request from the application program, or data from a network file system. Bits in the envelope that identifies the source itself, the purpose, function, and the size of the data is understood by the network operating system. When the data packet arrives at its destination, the network operating system software can handle it efficiently and directs the data to a file or program that is right.

Common network communication protocol that is like a combination of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP), and Network Basic Input Output System (NetBIOS), is used in many network operating systems. There are also such as the Internet Packet Exchange (IPX), but the system TCP / IP and NetBIOS are frequently used in many operating systems today.
